SOS Children's Villages is a child focused, social development organization providing care and support to children who have lost or who are at risk of losing the care of their biological family. SOS Children's Villages in Ghana is a member of SOS-Kinderdorf International, the largest private, welfare organization for children all over the world.
SOS Children’s Villages has been active in Ghana since 1974, and has presence in Tema, Asiakwa, Kumasi and Tamale. The first village was built in Tema through the efforts of two gallant Ghanaian women; Madam Alice Appiah (affectionately called Grandma Alice) & retired social worker Madam Mercy Adebi Busia (Sister-in-law to Dr. K. A Busia, second Prime Minister of Ghana)
Madam Mercy Busia was moved by the sad fate of children being cast out by their families for reasons of traditional beliefs and decided to take action. During a visit to Norway in 1967/68, she found out about the work of SOS Children's Villages and contacted Hermann Gmeiner to discuss the possibility of setting up an SOS village here in Ghana. Hermann Gmeiner visited Ghana two years later and the first SOS Children’s Village in Ghana was established.
The late Mrs. Alice Affuma Appea popularly known as Grandma Alice was one of the first executive members of the Association and devoted her life, time and efforts to see it well rooted in Ghana
Currently, we have four programme locations in Tema, Asiakwa, Kumasi and Tamale. We also run special projects across the country.
