The Tamale Programme Location, affectionately called the Pride of the Savannah, is home to children who are growing up surrounded by care, culture, and hope. Set within a vibrant metropolis known for its warm hospitality and strong traditions, the SOS Children’s Village in Tamale is a place where childhood is protected and futures are nurtured.
Officially inaugurated in 2010, the programme is located in Kambonayili, a lively suburb near the University for Development Studies. Here, children live in family homes where they are cared for, listened to, and encouraged to dream.

The Village is thoughtfully designed to feel like a real community. Twelve family houses sit alongside shared spaces that support children’s health, learning, and everyday life, including a medical centre, a social centre, a guest house, and staff residences. At the heart of the Village is the ultra-modern SOS Hermann Gmeiner School, where children from the Village and surrounding communities learn, play, and discover their potential together.
Beyond providing alternative care, the Tamale programme works hand in hand with families in nearby communities, strengthening households, preventing family separation, and ensuring that more children can grow up safe, loved, and supported, right where they belong.
