SOS Children’s Villages is a child-focused social development organisation. We support children who have lost parental care, or who are at risk of losing it, so they can grow up in safe, loving families. We are part of SOS-Kinderdorf International, the world’s largest private organisation dedicated to children’s welfare.
Our Journey in Ghana
Our story in Ghana began in 1974, driven by compassion, courage, and the belief that no child should grow up alone. Today, we work in Tema, Asiakwa, Kumasi, and Tamale, supporting children and families across the country.
How It All Started
The first SOS Children’s Village in Ghana was built in Tema through the remarkable efforts of two visionary Ghanaian women, Madam Alice Affuma Appea, lovingly known as Grandma Alice, and retired social worker Madam Mercy Adebi Busia.
Madam Mercy Busia was deeply concerned by the way some children were abandoned because of traditional beliefs. Determined to change their fate, she took action.
A Global Connection, a Local Impact
During a visit to Norway in 1967/68, Madam Mercy Busia learned about the work of SOS Children’s Villages. She reached out to the organisation’s founder, Hermann Gmeiner, to explore the possibility of bringing this model of care to Ghana.
Two years later, Hermann Gmeiner visited Ghana, and soon after, the first SOS Children’s Village was established.
The Legacy of Grandma Alice
Grandma Alice was among the first executive members of SOS Children’s Villages in Ghana. She devoted her life, time, and energy to ensuring the organisation took firm root in the country, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and unwavering commitment to children.
Where We Are Today
Today, we operate four programme locations: Tema, Asiakwa, Kumasi, and Tamale, and implement special projects nationwide. Through family-like care, family strengthening, and community support, we continue to stand with children and families, helping them build safer and more hopeful futures.
